10 GigE server network ports to make up 50% of market by 2017, report finds

Server network ports are on the front edge of an emerging growth curve. According to a new Dell'Oro Group report, 10 GigE ports will comprise over 50 percent of total server network ports by 2017. However, the research firm said that the growth will plateau and start to decline beginning in 2018.

Sameh Boujelbene, director at Dell'Oro, said in a release what's driving growth in this segment are two upgrade cycles in the data center: the enterprise migration towards 10 GigE, and cloud migration to 25/50/100 GigE.

"Enterprise migration to 10 Gigabit has been slow but will finally manifest over the next two years, driven by a more complete 10G Base-T ecosystem," Boujelbene said. "As the Enterprise Server market is shrinking, however, and as most of the growth in server shipments will be driven by the Cloud segment, we are forecasting that 10 Gigabit will peak by 2018."
