Alaska Communications unveils 50 Mbps residential, business tier in Juneau

Alaska Communications is upping its broadband service offerings for both residential and business customers, announcing that it will now offer a 50 Mbps speed tier with unlimited data usage in Juneau.

This latest speed bump follows the ILEC's move to introduce speeds of up to 15 Mbps statewide in May and 50 Mbps in Anchorage in August.

Albeit an asymmetrical service, customers that subscribe to the 50 Mbps tier will get upload speeds of 10 Mbps to conduct various activities such as video chatting, gaming, file backups and storage.

Increasing broadband speeds has been an ongoing priority for Alaska Communications.

While it has yet to jump on the residential fiber-to-the-premises (FTTP) bandwagon, the service provider is now offering a 1 Gbps service for local businesses in Anchorage thanks to an ongoing expansion of its fiber network.

Broadband overall continues to be a hot seller for Alaska Communications.

In the second quarter, consumer revenue rose 1 percent year-over-year to $10.4 million, with broadband revenues growing 11.4 percent. Likewise, business and wholesale service revenue of $27.7 million grew $2.3 million or 9.2 percent year-over-year, with broadband revenues growing 11.3 percent.

Similar to the 50 Mbps tier, the 1 Gbps and 200 Mbps speed business dedicated Internet offerings are all unlimited without any usage caps.
