AT&T promises to bring 1 Gig to Overland Park, Kan., Houston

AT&T (NYSE: T) is continuing with its 1 Gbps fiber to the home (FTTH) rollout strategy, announcing that it will bring its GigaPower service to both Overland Park, Kan., and Houston.

To support the service in Overland Park and Houston, AT&T will deploy additional fiber and GPON-based electronics to the existing network. The service provider said that it would reveal specific locations of the cities and pricing for the GigaPower service at an undetermined later date.

In Overland Park, AT&T will be able to more effectively challenge Google (NASDAQ: GOOG) Fiber, which has been working with the city to bring super-fast Internet and accompanying services to the city. Although Google Fiber started talking to city officials last September, plans were held up when the City Council postponed the deal over some questions about liability issues.

"The memorandum of understanding between AT&T and the city demonstrates our commitment to allow for fair and equitable competition that benefits consumers," said Mayor Carl Gerlach, in a release.

By announcing its intent to bring service to Houston, AT&T is building on the momentum it gained through its initial FTTH deployment in Austin and surrounding communities last December. More recently, AT&T revealed plans to bring service to Dallas and Fort Worth this summer.

"The Greater Houston Partnership applauds AT&T for making this kind of investment to bring their all-fiber network to our community as it will help ensure Houston remains competitive and at the forefront of next-generation technologies and services that have significant impact on all sectors of the economy," said Bob Harvey, president and CEO of the Greater Houston Partnership, in a release.

Similar to Overland Park and other areas where it announced its intent to deliver the 1 Gbps service, AT&T said that specific locations of availability and pricing for the Houston market will be announced at a later date.

In April, the service provider said it would consider bringing its GigaPower network to up to 100 candidate cities and municipalities across 25 U.S. markets. Part of that announcement will target other potential Houston areas, including Galveston, Pasadena, Pearland and Spring as candidates for the service.

Outside of Kansas and Texas, the service provider has announced plans to deliver the GigaPower network to Charlotte, Nashville, Raleigh-Durham and Winston-Salem.
