Australian regulator mandates NBN Co. to rework network interconnection proposal

NBN Co. suffered a bit of a setback in building Australia's National Broadband Network (NBN) this week as the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) ruled that it initial plans to build only 14 points of interconnect (POI) are inadequate.

The ACCC, reports TeleGeography citing an article in the Business Spectator, wants the NBN Co.'s plan to include at least 120 POI. Under the initial plan, NBN Co. proposed constructing 14 POI in only Australia's capital cities.

Building out these additional interconnection points will satisfy concerns cited by Australia's largest service providers, including Telstra, Optus and AAPT, which wanted 200 - 400 POIs.

However, the potential downside of the ACCC's proposal is that it could affect the NBN's return and make it more challenging for the NBN Co. to offer one price to access the new network.
