BT conducts on-demand FTTP trial in Cornwall

BT (NYSE: BT) has completed trials on new Fiber to the Premises (FTTP) technology in the Saint Agnes, Cornwall area that it claims can deliver fiber on demand to a home or business in an area already served by its Fiber to the Cabinet (FTTC) network.

So how does this new initiative work?

While BT could not previously deliver FTTP-based speeds in FTTC-enabled areas, BT's new solution takes advantage of the fiber already deployed between its CO (central office) and the street cabinet where the necessary last mile electronics reside.

The service provider, which is in the process of rolling out a 300 Mbps-based FTTP service, plans to conduct other trials on its FTTP on-demand technology this summer. Based on the results of those trials, BT Openreach will make it commercially available to all of its wholesale customers by the spring 2013.

In addition to expanding the boundaries of FTTP, the service provider plans to introduce a higher speed tier of its FTTC broadband offering this spring, delivering downstream speeds of up to 80 Mbps and upstream speeds of up to 20 Mbps.

These latest initiatives come on the heels of BT's move to begin a FTTP trial targeting multi-dwelling units (MDUs).
