China Telecom employs Huawei's OTN gear for backbone upgrade

China Telecom has chosen Huawei as its global optical transport network (OTN) vendor to support a suite of international private line services for its business and wholesale customers.

These new backbone OTNs will be built in the U.S., UK, Sweden, Germany, Singapore, Hong Kong, and eight provinces of mainland China and multiple core nodes in these regions.

The OTN and WDM system will replace the existing SDH network China Telecom had in place. With the previous solution, it deployed SDH at the access layer, while WDM was used at the aggregation and backbone layers.

By using OTN, China Telecom said it will be able to improve its service access and scheduling functions. OTN can overcome the scale and technical costs that exist with traditional SDH systems.

OTN adoption is growing. According to a recent study from Infonetics, OTN switching revenue rose 23 percent in the first half of the year to $3.9 billion.
