Core routers take lead in lackluster Q3 router revenue season

A silver lining in the third quarter router market could be found in the core segment, where revenues climbed 10 percent, according to a new Infonetics IHS report. On a global basis, the research firm said that overall third quarter router and switch revenue totaled $3.5 billion, down 12 percent sequentially and 7 percent down year-over-year.

From a regional perspective, there were stark differences between EMEA and North America. Driven by what analysts say are signs of a recovery, EMEA's carrier routing and switching revenue rose 3 percent sequentially, and up 9 percent from the same period a year ago. Alternatively, North America, Asia Pacific and Caribbean-Latin America were down both quarter-over-quarter and year-over-year.

While Cisco continued to enjoy its lead as the top router vendor, Infonetics noted that Juniper, Huawei and Alcatel-Lucent (NYSE: ALU) are fighting for the number 2, 3 and 4 positions. Release
