Equinix to open new Dallas-Ft. Worth area data center

Equinix is going to open a new international business exchange (IBX) data center in Dallas, allowing it to support growing demand for interconnection services in the Dallas/Ft. Worth metropolitan area, one of its densest markets.

The service provider said that it will invest nearly $20 million in the new DA7 facility, which includes an initial phase of 300 cabinets with 800 additional cabinets expected by the second quarter of 2016.

When the site is fully built out, it will have nearly 40,000 square feet of total colocation space. It will increase Equinix's Dallas-Forth Worth area footprint to 214,000 square feet of colocation space at six data centers, four of which are located at Dallas Infomart. This deployment enables the customer to meet its changing IT needs by driving innovation in the cloud.

This is not a speculative build. Already, a Fortune 100 global manufacturing company has committed to purchase 200 cabinets or almost 1 MW of the initial phase of DA7 to support connectivity to Microsoft Azure via the Equinix Cloud Exchange.

What also makes Dallas a prime spot for Equinix's customers is the company's access to over 100 service providers. Customers have network choice and connectivity to over 40 cloud providers and 30 content and digital media companies including Adobe, AOL, AT&T, China Telecom, Cisco Systems, Comcast, Cox Communications, Level 3 Communications, Sprint, Tata, TeliaSonera, Telefonica, Time Warner Cable, Walmart, XO Communications and Zayo.

Having access to such a wide array of network and cloud players will continue to make Equinix an attractive data center provider to existing and new customers that want to establish a presence in Dallas.

Outside of Dallas, the service provider is being no less aggressive, having completed the build out of its NY6 data center earlier this year, for example. The NY6 facility provides over 16,000 square feet of colocation space and 720 cabinets with the opportunity to increase to 33,000 square feet and 1,440 cabinets in future phases. At that time, Equinix set a goal to open five new International Business Exchange (IBX) data centers, which increased the scale of its platform by over 10 percent.
