Genesis secures funding, carrier interest for DSL Ring technology

It would seem that Genesis Technical Systems' debut of its 400 Mbps DSL Rings technology could be ho-hum news, especially in light of claims by Huawei and Nokia Siemens' claims of transmitting 700 Mbps and 825 Mbps over existing copper, respectively.

However, Genesis claims that what sets it apart from the high speed DSL pack is its approach. Genesis achieves its 400 Mbps feat through a RING configuration by using three existing telecom standards, Resilient Packet Ring (RPR), VDSL2 and G.Bond.

But the main differentiator, explained Stephen Cooke, President and CTO of Genesis, in an ISPreview article, is that unlike Huawei's 4-pair SuperMIMO and NSN's 2-pair VDSL2 offerings, DSL Rings is a line-powered 2-pair solution so it does not need remote powering equipment without having to deploy any fiber. Instead, it gets its power from the CO. Of course, a service provider like BT could leverage DSL Rings technology in tandem with its current VDSL2-based Fiber to the Cabinet (FTTC) network.

Genesis' DSL Rings DSL claims appear to be gaining some attention.

Not only was the company able to secure $194 million in funding from Minerva, the University of Warwick Science Park's business angel network investor group, but it also is talking with two unnamed UK-based service providers about trialing the DSL Rings technology.
