GVT debuts new satellite-based pay-TV service in Brazil

Vivendi's GVT has introduced a new DTH satellite service in Sao Paulo, Brazil in its first move to challenge the country's area cable operators Net Servicos, TVA and Sky, which have enjoyed a near monopoly on video services.

Not content to be just another video provider, Amos Genish, GVT's CEO, said the service provider wants to "break paradigms in the TV business model."

GVT's new satellite-based service follows the passing of a new law that lets Brazilian telcos offer video services, including satellite and IPTV.

Initially offering a 140 channel lineup, future iterations of GVT's hybrid service could include on-demand and IPTV-based interactive content.
