Integra Telecom puts ADTRAN to work for its Ethernet over TDM solution

Integra Telecom has added Ethernet over TDM (EoTDM) as the latest weapon in its ever-growing holster of Ethernet service solutions.

Taking an agnostic approach to delivering Ethernet, one that incorporates its growing on-net fiber network and Ethernet over Copper (EoC), the service provider is leveraging ADTRAN's (Nasdaq: ADTN) Total Access 5000 to provide EoTDM service out of 300 central offices (CO).

"Our customers are looking for private, carrier-grade Ethernet access to all of their locations--regardless of whether they reside in a downtown area, in the suburbs, or a more remote location," said Craig Heidgerken, vice president of engineering at Integra Telecom,  in a statement.

Heidgerken's thesis reflects the time to market and reach realities Integra faces in expanding its for Ethernet service reach: while EoC is a sound method to fill in the so-called fiber gaps it is still beholden to the physical limitation of the copper line so EoTDM can fill those needs.

But with ADTRAN's gear, the service provider can increase its addressable market for Ethernet Services, including support for Ethernet over direct fiber, optical wavelengths (C/DWDM), copper (e.SHDSL, ADSL2+, VDSL2), SONET, and TDM (DS1/E1, DS3).

Its move to leverage ADTRAN for its EoTDM service follows an earlier move this year to deploy Overture for its Ethernet over Copper (EoC) initiative.
