Internode to deliver IPTV service over Australia's NBN network

Internode is getting a head start with its soon to be launched IPTV service, fetchtv, even though the multicast services that are usually used to provide the TV service won't be available on the National Broadband Network (NBN) fiber network until the middle of next year.

The service provider appears to motivated to get a jump on competitors that will likely offer competing IPTV services over the NBN.

"It completes the triple play of data, voice and video," said Jim Kellett, Internode's product manager. "...Rather than wait for the NBN to deliver multicast, we have worked out how to use existing technology to deliver high-quality video-on-demand using fetchtv over the NBN."

To offer its IPTV service over the NBN, Internode said that it developed what it called a "unique delivery system." During a recent demonstration in Bunya, Queensland, Internode gave users a sneak peek at some of the VoD content that they will offer over the NBN network.

Internode, along with Telstra (ASX: TLS.AX), iiNet, and iPrimus, is one of the NBN's first ISP customers to begin end-user trials on the first five release sites this month.
