Level 3 extends business fiber reach in Spokane, Wash., and Coeur d'Alene, Idaho

Level 3 Communications has wrapped its network expansion effort in Spokane, Wash., and Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, enhancing its route miles and on-net building reach to address business customers in each city.

With the project now complete, Level 3 has a total of 276 on-net buildings and nearly 300 metro route miles in the greater Spokane area.

Having greater on-net building access means that Level 3 can forgo having to rent last-mile facilities from a local ILEC to deliver services like Ethernet to local businesses. In addition to lowering costs, the service provider can control the quality of service (QoS) and service delivery time in the buildings it has connected to its metro and long-haul networks.

While the focus of this build is on Washington and Idaho, one of the differentiators that Level 3 brings to the table over area competitors like Fatbeam, particularly for large multinational corporations (MNCs), is national and global access.

Today, Level 3 has access to a total of 41,000 on-net buildings worldwide and connectivity to over 500 markets in 60 countries. By deepening its penetration in markets like Spokane and Coeur d'Alene, which have become high-tech centers, Level 3 can potentially gain a greater share of enterprise service revenues.

The service provider won't announce its second quarter earnings until July 29, but it's likely enterprise services will be one of the company's revenue highlights. During the first quarter 2015, Level 3 reported that in the North American region enterprise revenues rose 9 percent to $1.1 billion.
