Lumos deepens Pennsylvania presence with new PoP

Lumos Networks is furthering its foothold in the Pennsylvania business and wholesale services market by opening a new Point of Presence (PoP) in Washington, Pa.

One of the benefits of the Washington site is its location about 25 miles south of the Pittsburgh Central Business District (CBD).

Set to open in the first week of February, the site is the second PoP the company has opened in the Pittsburgh metro area and will allow Lumos to offer data center products and services to its customers in the region for the first time. It will also complement the current PoP that is located in Pittsburgh's CBD.

Besides its location, Craig Drinkhall, CTO of Lumos Networks, said that the Washington, Pa., site offers business and carrier customers "dual-PoP connectivity to customers in the region who want connectivity without a single point of failure to reach locations outside Pittsburgh, including Internet exchanges and the Northern Virginia corridor in Ashburn."

Ideal for companies that have Business Continuity Disaster Recovery (BCDR) applications and off-site computing needs in the region, the new PoP currently has capacity for 24 cabinets with the option of expanding capacity up to eight-fold, depending on the particular customer's requirements.

The opening of the new PoP is part of a broader "edge out" strategy Lumos has taken to pursue new business and wholesale opportunities, particularly wireless backhaul, in neighboring markets outside of its Virginia home market.
