MegaPath battles cable with asymmetric 50/10 Mbps Ethernet offering

MegaPath has introduced a new asymmetric 50/10 Mbps Ethernet service in an effort to challenge cable operators that are expanding the reach of Ethernet services to business customers.

Initially available in 517 central offices (COs), the CLEC will extend the asymmetric service to 700 COs and offer up to 150/10 Mbps by the end of the year.

The CLEC claims that what sets its asymmetric service apart from traditional low-cost offerings provided by cable operators is that it includes SLAs, dedicated bandwidth and a platform that support QoS for various applications such as voice and video.

Joining other competitive providers and incumbent telcos such as XO Communications, CenturyLink (NYSE: CTL) and Windstream (Nasdaq: WIN), MegaPath has aggressively rolled out its Ethernet over Copper (EoC) service. Last October, it completed the expansion of the service to 50 national U.S. markets out of 700 COs.

MegaPath may have an early near-term advantage in delivering an asymmetric Ethernet service, but it's hardly alone.

Sam Koetter, senior product manager of Ethernet services for XO told FierceTelecom in a previous interview that it has tentative plans in place to offer a 20/3 Mbps asymmetric Ethernet service at a lower price than its symmetrical EoC services sometime later this year.
