The Metro Ethernet Forum has begun a new leadership chapter, naming Andrew McFadzen, Orange Business Services' head of global marketing, as its new chairman.

Serving as a MEF director since 2011, McFadzen has more than 30 years of experience in the international telecom sector.

In addition to holding a number of leadership positions with Orange Business Services' units in the United Kingdom and Germany, he worked in a number of international roles at Deutsche Telekom and Cable & Wireless, now Vodafone.

One of the big initiatives that McFadzen will continue to drive will be the MEF's Carrier Ethernet 2.0 certification process. Over the past year, a number of Tier 1 and Tier 2 service providers, including Alaska Communications, Comcast Business (Nasdaq: CMCSA), Telstra Wholesale, and tw telecom (Nasdaq: TWTC) gained CE 2.0 certification.

Orange Business Services itself remains one of the largest global Ethernet players.

The service provider's continued expansion of its Ethernet presence in key markets, including both Asia Pacific and Latin America, have helped it maintain its dominance in the global Ethernet market. However, according to Vertical Systems Group's Global Provider Ethernet Leaderboard, it is facing strong competition from BT (NYSE: BT), which is also enhancing its global reach.
