PON deployments give broadband access sales $12B lift in 2015, says research firm

Service providers' adoption of PON technologies for FTTH deployments drove up the overall broadband access market in 2015 to $12 billion, says Dell'Oro Group in a new report. Due to strong deployments in China, particularly in CPE, PON revenue from three manufacturers -- Huawei, ZTE and Alcatel-Lucent -- grew by 21 percent to over $6 billion in 2015.

Meanwhile, Alcatel-Lucent, Calix, and ADTRAN saw growth in North America as more of their broadband provider customers deployed gigabit services.

Dell'Oro Senior Analyst Alam Tamboli said that while the DSL and cable modem segments dropped in 2015, these are set to make a comeback in 2016 as more service providers deploy emerging technologies such as G.fast, VDSL2 35b and DOCSIS 3.1. "This will be especially important as Service Providers, whose current infrastructure is based around DOCSIS or DSL technologies, will look to more effectively and efficiently compete with competitors who utilize fiber."
