TelePacific trialing SD-WAN solution for business customers

TelePacific Communications is piloting a software-defined wide area network (SD-WAN) technology solution for customers in New York, Colorado, Texas, Oklahoma, Florida and Washington ahead of a national service rollout.

TelePacific said its SD-WAN technology will provide enhanced over-the-top (OTT) capability and make it possible to provision, maintain and manage advanced services for business customers across the country. The initial SD-WAN deployment will carry OTT hosted PBX, MPLS and continuity solutions.

"This opens up tremendous possibilities for us, as a managed services carrier, and for our customers, who can now simplify, secure and supercharge their communications," said Jared Martin, TelePacific's director of network architecture and security, in a statement. "One of our customers needed to bring up a new site and connect it to their existing TelePacific MPLS network, but the site was outside of our traditional footprint. With SD-WAN we are able to securely tunnel all of their MPLS traffic through our gateway back to the TelePacific core and connect it to their private MPLS network of sites."

The SD-WAN pilot program comes after TelePacific earlier this year acquired Waltham, Massachusetts-based service provider DSCI, in order to procure more presence in the Northeast U.S. and a larger set of managed service capabilities.

Following the acquisition, TelePacific estimated that about 50 percent of its business is now in managed services. Analysts have pegged the $123 million deal as "strategically positive" for TelePacific because of its potential to help the company scale service availability.

"The purchase of DSCI is strategically positive as it offers TelePacific the opportunity to address a national market for managed services, specifically for hosted voice solutions," wrote Moody's in a research note. "DSCI offers cloud-based services that customers can access via third party connectivity. This allows TelePacific to expand beyond its facilities-based footprint in California, Nevada and Texas and compete nationally for these customers."
