TeliaSonera ramps North American expansion, increases reach by 40%

TeliaSonera International Carrier's (TSIC) ongoing drive into the North American market has enabled it to increase its overall reach to 40 percent.

In just 18 months it has added 100 new service provider customers. Part of its expansion in North America included increasing the reach to 62 major North American data centers.

Having owned and operated its own network backbone in North America since 2000, the service provider has been increasing its investments in fiber and optical networking technology over the past three years. These expansions have enabled TSIC to increase its offerings for Tier 2 and Tier 3 markets that are typically underserved by traditional U.S.-based telcos.

This expansion included the buildout of 100G network routes in Europe and North America that it completed in 2013.

The European 100G network is based on Coriant's--hiT 7300 platform, while the U.S. network is based on Infinera's (Nasdaq: INFN) DTN-X platform. Serving a mix of traditional carriers and content providers that are furthering their presence in North America, TSIC's U.S. network is based on fiber purchased from WilTel in the late 1990s. In 2009, TSIC deployed Infinera's DTN platform to provide 1 Gbps and 10 Gbps wavelength services.

Interestingly, TSIC's work in North America is having benefits in South America, a market where it has become the top ranked backbone provider in the region, according to Internet performance analysts at Dyn Research.

Having broad connectivity options in both South America and North America positions it to become a key provider for the upcoming Rio Olympic Games in 2016 and to meet other regional traffic demands from businesses and data center providers like Equinix.
